ClASS HISTORY We entered Uni High as Sub -Freshmen in 1948. For officers we elected Pete Stearns, Dick Pogue, Judy Cleary, Anne Colwell, and Karlyn Kettelkamp. In our eyes, the most important event of the year was our trip to New Salem. The next year we became Freshmen, and began to enter the school's activities. Our all-school party was recognized as the most successful party of the year. Our class officers were Maggie Casserly, Caroline Stoddard, Anne Colwell, Mike Yohe, Dan Fraenkel, and Cookie Cohn. Three of our members were in the operetta. We became Sophomores the following year. Our leaders, Jack Wills, Karlyn Kettel- kamp, Shirley Beaty, Mike Yohe, Caroline Stoddard, and Dan Fraenkel, guided us in planning the Spring Fling. The class was well represented on the football, basketball, track, and other teams. As Juniors, we elected Cookie Cohn, Polly Harper, Pat Petry, Bill Pickard, Jim Gillespie, Nancy Working. In addition to participating in many activities, the Juniors gave the Christmas Dance, and the highlight of the year, the Junior -Senior Prom. At last we became Seniors. Our officers were Caroline Stoddard, Jim Gillespie, Pat' Lawder, Bill Pickard, Pete Stearns and Polly Harper. We were leaders making 1952-53 a better-than -average year for such activities as dramatics, athletics, and G.A.A. seniors SHIRLEY LEE BEATY "Shirley" "There's so much homework! STUDENT COUNCIL President Peter Stearns Vice-president John Rund Treasurer Steve Webb Secretary Mariann Harper Student Council accomplished several things during the first months of the school year. Many of these were financial; the Carnival was an unprecedented success. Council was able to grant additional funds to many activities. Matters of policy which had not been dealt with before were acted upon in an attempt to establish a better foundation for the school and its activities. A trip to visit another council, with hope of a reciprocal arrangement, was planned. Suggestions relative to various school problems, such as telephone use, were presented to the faculty. In addition, the usual lesser problems which arise annually were satisfactorily solved. Many other improvements were discussed during the year. Particular attention was paid to increasing completeness of coverage of the school, quality of writing, and the appearance of the paper. Believing that the paper had improved sufficiently to make this vent- ure worthwhile, the staff brought out the first printed paper in Uni High's history on February 3rd. The paper was sponsored^ by Miss LaRocque. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography club met on Monday afternoons with Mi. Laska as the sponsor. The club had no all-inclusive program, as each member chose some aspect of photography in which he was interested, and proceeded to study the topic at his own speed. Because darkroom work is the foundation of photography and since it must be learned early to master the art, the dark- room was a popular spot for photo enthusiasts throughout the year. Many people were active in the club this year. Club members were Kit Bannister, David Emerson, Dan Fraenkel, Gregor Gregoric, Lorna Klorfine, Don Polly, Erick Reickert, and Bob Working. The program consisted mostly of Christ- mas songs, accompanied by tableaux on the stage. Many of the chorus members participated in the Champaign County Music Festival in April. Chorus members also played host to members of the West Aurora High School chorus when they presented several concerts in the Twin Cities. ENSEMBLES This year, for the first time in Uni High's history, Boys' and Girls' Ensembles com- bined their efforts, and sang two numbers arranged for mixed voices. Orchesis took advantage of this combination in the Christmas Assembly, picturing "The Twelve Days of Christmas," accompanied by the Ensembles. Girls' Ensemble sang several of Ben- jamin Britton's arrangements of "The Ceremony of Carols, " which provided the back- ground music for "The Juggler of Notre Dame. " This dance was presented in the Christ- mas Assembly, and also at Wesley Foundation. Both groups sang in the tableaux in the Christmas Concert — the boys were street carolers, and the girls sang around the Christ- mas tree. In addition, they gave several programs for civic groups in the community, Membership in the Ensembles, directed by Mr. Warren Schuetz, is restricted to juniors and seniors because of the sixth hour practice time. MADRIGALS Madrigals were again Uni High's most outstanding musical group. They improved their program this year by memo- rizing their music and adding many new numbers. The group made recordings which were broadcast on station WILL. They also sang at the University Lincoln Day ceremonies. On May 7 they made their annual weekend trip. The group climaxed the year by singing at Commencement. THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE Frederic, the pirate apprentice, has served out his years of indenture, and urges the pirates to join him in a more lawful calling, Dut they refuse. Ruth, however wishes to become his wife. Having seen but few women, he does not know if she is as pretty as she says she is; but finally he consents to marry her. Just then the wards of General Stanley happen upon the scene. Frederic sees their beauty - and Ruth's plainess - and renounces her. Of these girls, Mabe takes a particular interest in Frederic and he in her. The other girls are seized by the pirates and are threatened with marriage. When General Stanley arrives, he dis- suades the pirates, who themselves are orphans, by telling them that he is an orphan. This so works upon their sympathy that they let him and his wards go free. Later this lie bothers the General's conscience; he sits brooding over it at night in a Gothic ruin, consoled by his wards' sympathy and Frederic's plan to lead a band of police against the pirates. He is Meanwhile, the Pirate King and Ruth appear at the window and beckon to Frederic; they have discovered that his indentures were to have run until his twenty-first birthday, and, as he was born on February 29th, he has really had as yet only five birthdays. Obeying the dictates of a strong sense of duty, he immediately re- joins the pirates. He tells them of the deception that has been practiced on them, and they seize and bind General Stanley. But the police come to the rescue and charge the pirates yield "in Queen Victoria's name." This they do. Ruth explains, however, that these men who appear to be lawless pirates are really all "noblemen who have gone wrong," and they are pardoned and marry General Stanley's daughters. We wel^ c orned back our coach, Da le Lacky^ after a lea ve_ofLabsence in the_ Navy and~gave h im the best football reaso n a nvl ea mli as e ver-had-at Uni High. Ou r season record was five wins, one loss, and one _lie^- We started out the season with a small team and thenumber did not increase very much throughout the season. At one time the num- ber was down to a very meager seven. We were hurt early in the season when Dick Henry suffered a shoulder separation and Mike Yohe broke a bone in his hand . At times coach wondered if we would win even one game. Practices were slow and sluggish, but after the Mansfield game Coach saw that the team really did have the spirit and will to win. The morale of the players was given a boast by the strong back- ing from the students and friends of the school. School spirit was much greater than it has been in past years. e-i-i) THE LETTERMEN CLEM PIERCE (RE) Clem was always there to get that long pass when we were in the hole and needed it to bring us out. He was named to the second team on the Conference All-Stars and elected co-captain on next year's team. PETE WEILER (RE) Pete specialized on defense and broke through the opposing line several times to send down their men with large losses. JACK FIELDS (C) Jack wasn't the biggest center in the conference but other teams had a lot of respect for his hard tackling. He was named to the second team on the Conference All -Stars and elected co -captain on next year's team. BILL SWINFORD (C) Bill stepped in when Jack got hurt and did a very creditable job. When the situation call- ed for a punt we didn't worry because we knew Bill would get it back there. PETE STEARNS (LE) Pete, our captain, was always in the open to get those short passes as well as doing stellar work on defense. Whenever our morale was down during a game it was Pete who brought it up. "DOC" SHELTON (RH) Doc was our sidelines runner. When he got past the scrimmage line, there wasn't an opposing backfield man who could catch him. He had a phenominal 15.0 rushing yard average. JOE HASSELL (LH) When there were a few yards to make up the middle, Joe was called on. He was perhaps even better on defense. I don't think anyone who saw the Fisher game will forget one tackle he made, spinning a man several feet through the air. NICK LOGAN (LH) Nick was a hard driver for yardage who improved steadily throughout the season. He will be back next year and should bolster the team considerably. WILLIE MARTIN (QB) Willie was the boy who always held the team together. In a game he could be found all over the field, tackling, running, blocking, or passing. Willie was named to the Conference All-Star team for the third consecutive year. BILL BECKER (QB) Bill stepped in when Willie Martin was moved to halfback, due to injuries at that position. For the second year in a row he was the smallest man on the team, but that didn't dampen his spirit. We won this one 50 -6 . Our play was better than the most optimistic person visualized. Willie got four touchdowns, while Doc and Joe got two apiece. The team was surprised about the good following they had at the game. It was this mat made the team play as spirited as they did. The first team played steadily only until the end of the first quarter, after that Coach cleaned the bench and everybody got a taste of football. The score of the St. Joe game was 25-6 for us. The team showed that they were to be reckoned with in the conference. The team had a lot of spirit. The blocking and running of our backfield was really something to watch. One of the most startling plays came when Al Shelton stole a pass right out of a St. Joe player's hands and returned it for a touch- down. ST. JOSEPH We were a little over confident before the Homer game and it took the team a full quarter to realize that they had a hard game on their hands. At the end of the first half the score was 25-12, mainly because of the lack of pass defense. After the half this was remedied, but the final score was still in favor of Homer, 31-25. This was the seventeenth win in a row for Homer . Rumors circulated before this game that Fisher was going to have a track meet. The team was keyed up after they heard that! We worked hard on pass defense all week and it payed off in the game. Uni was ahead 14-7 in the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter the Bunnies pushed over one more touchdown and made the extra point, ending the game in a tie. It was the first tied game in the conference. 4l F"***V L^^S ^■fl Hl ^k^K ^ |L,0 FISHER i <£ . • v* 1 We were definitely down in spirit for this game after our loss to Homer, but Sidell just did not have enough to beat us. When the final gun sounded the score was 39-8. This was another game in which everybody got to play. In all, seven players from Uni High entered the scoring column including extra points. Sidell scored one lone touchdown, the other points coming when Willie stepped back out of the end zone when he attempted to punt. We were without the trusty services of Joe Hassell for this one and at times it looked as if Mahomet might be on top at the end of the game. We led 6- at the half on the basis of Al Shelton's 58 yard jaunt around end. Mahomet scored and kicked the extra point, giving them a temporary lead, but Clem Pierce rushed behind the Mahomet Line, knocked down a pass, and ran for a touchdown, making the score 12- 8. We closed the season against Longview. Every- thing we did seemed to go for a touchdown . It was now how we would score, but how many we would score. Final count was; Shelton, four; Hassell, four; Martin one; Pierce, one. Extra points were counted by Stearns, Weiler, and Hassell, bringing our final point total to 63, while we held Longview to a lone safety. Dick was never one of the leading scorers, but it seemed like he made his points when they count- ed the most. Dick was one of our best rebounders, and although he was only 5' 11", he was the tallest regular on the team. Clem Pierce. Clem played out in front in our zone defense and because of his quick reactions was able to deflect passes and start a fast break for two more points. We will see more of Clem next year. Jim Gillespie. Jim was a player who never got excited and always seemed to keep the other players cool and collected. When Clem started a fast break, Jim was already near the basket to lay the ball up. Joe HasselL Joe was our leading scorer, sporti ng a 18.0 average, which put him among the top ten in East Central Illinois. Joe had a jump shot that was deadly~arld - very hard tcTBlock. Willie Martin. Willie was our second high scorer and also did a large part of the rebounding. He was named to the Illini-Valley All -Star„ team for his fine all-around playing. Kent Karraker. Although Kent was short he worked around the pivot feeding the ball to the guards breaking around fo a shot. He will be back next year and should bolster the team. After our first four games we lost our center, Al Shelton, for the rest of the season because of illness. Although Al played in just four games, he was still one of the leading scorers when statistics were compiled at the end of the season. The flu claimed just about everyone on the team at one time or another. Things were at their worst when we were scheduled to play Ogden when four of our first five were sick, but Ogden had the same difficulty and at their request the game was cancelled. At the end of the season our conference record was seven wins and six losses which put us in fifth place, which was the highest a Uni Basketball team has been in many a year. The difference was so small between the places that if we had won our last game we would have been in third place. The con- ference was made up of very well matched teams this year and the winner was often the team who had a good night at the basket. HIGHLIGHTS After our loss to Mansfield we were key- ed up very much for the St. Joe game. St. Joe has been named the team to beat for the conference crown and we felt that we could do it. The game was nip and tuck all of the way. The score was 52-52 with about 30 seconds to play. St. Joe stole the ball and Bushboom drove down the floor for an easy layup. AlShelton came from nowhere to tie Bushboom up. We got the tip and Joe Hassell dropped in a 25 -foot one-hander just before the gun sounded, making the score 54-52. St. Joe went on to win the crown with just one more defeat after our upset. We were the underdogs at Fisher the next weekend, but we pulled our second upset, beating Fisher 50-49. The score had again been tied, 49-49, with ten seconds left when Shelton was fouled. He missed the first free throw, but made the second, giving us a one- point lead. Fisher took one shot, but they missed and Shelton got a jump ball and bat- ted it way down the court. Fisher didn't have time to get another shot, giving us the ball game. We made our longest trip of the season to Chrism an, a distance of about 50 miles. We won 56-49 playing on a new court. The school is about our size, but they have a scoreboard giving individual players' per- formances ! It was a happy bunch that made the trip home that night. Near the end of the season Unity beat us 65-61, but not without a struggle, Joe Hassell netted his season's high total of 33 points trying in vain to win the game . * t FIRST ROW: Charles Cairns, Bill Swinford, Pete Weiler, Dan McCollum, Clem Pierce, Bill Becker, Manager Louis Mesker. SECOND ROW: Asst. Coach Aldridge, Asst. Coach Cameron, Steve Webb, Francis Barker, Mike Hudson, Nick Logan, Willie Martin, Fred DeBoer, Jack Snader, David Lantz, Fred Fjelde, Al Shelton, Coach Lacky. TRACK Coach Lacky welcomed back several members of last year's squad. They were: Joe Hassell and Kent Karraker in the hurdles; Al Shelton and Jack Snader in the dashes; Bill Becker in the 440; Phil Douglass in the 880; Hassell in the high jump; Clem Pierce, Shelton, and Hassell in the broad jump; and last year's conference champion frosh-soph re- lay team consisting of Pete Weiler, Snader, Karraker, and Pierce. The members of this relay squad bolstered our dash strength this year. We were weak in the weight events, but good performances in the running events compensated for this. At the first meeting of the year 26 thin clad hopefuls turned out, butthis number increased to about 35 after operetta and basketball conflicts ended. FRONT ROW: Robert Working, Dan Fraenkel, Willie Martin, Pete Steams, Jim Gillespie, Erick Reickert. SECOND ROW: Bob Dodds, Vaughan Shoemaker, Karl Norton, John Sanford, Roy Tucker, Ed Tepper, Larry Farlow, Coach Lieberman TENNIS Uni High's 1953 tennis team was bolstered by the return of the two lettermen from the 1952 season, Pete Stearns and Bill Martin. In addition to these two, team prospects included several players who had gained experience in ex- hibition matches last year. Among these people were Jim Gillespie, Erick Reickert, Dan Fraenkel, and Karl Norton. The netmen, competing with larger schools than Uni does in most sports, included among its opponents such stal- warts as Danville, Decatur, Champaign, Mattoon, and Bloomington. CHEERLEADERS An innovation in Uni High Cheer leading this year was the addition of two reserves to the usual varsity contingent of four. All six girls cheered together at football games, but di- vided into the two groups for basketball. The varsity four- some cheered for the varsity, while the two reserves cheered for the junior Buckeyes. Varsity Cheerleaders were Anne Fjelde, Shirley Beaty, Jackie Sowers, and Karlyn Kettlekamp. Reserves were Linda Bennett and Arlene Schoenburg. CALENDAR ■ V i\ SEPTEMBER School opens earlier and the subs get smaller every year. The faculty decided against prolonging the agony and started off with a full day of classes. Prospects began looking up for Uni High dramatics as Mr. Gillette held a meet- ing of what was eventually to be the Uni High Players. About fifty people at- tended. 4. G.A.A. welcomed new girls at the annual Big Sister-Little Sister picnic in Hessel Park. 6. Howdy Hop. What's your middle name? It seems the whole contest had to be called off because someone cheated. Well, now, Patricia Zenobia Butler was a little far-fetched. 17. 18. 19. 22, 23. 25. Mrs. Hinze had to pick fifteen people out of fifty -one who tried out for "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay" . The biology classes took the day off to go to Kickapoo State Park and hunt in- sects. Rain and gray skies kept many insects hidden, and some eager students took to digging under old logs. Hey, Iook what happened to our football team! Uni's fast trio of Bill Martin, Joe Hassell, and Al Shelton led Buckeye athletics out of the doldrums, over- running Mansfield, 50-6. Jerry Kirk now holds one of the most unique positions in Uni High. He is the only male member of Orchesis . He was initiated in recognition of staging work on last spring's concert. Mrs. Hinze announced the cast for "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, " with Nancy Working and Linda Bennett taking the leading roles. What, Jerry in a romantic role? New chemical equation discovered this morning; potassium plus water equals one severely damaged lab sink. It seems the label said phosphorus. t OCTOBER 3. Dreams of a conference championship were brought down to earth by a 31-25 loss at Homer. This year's Carnival got off to a good start at the sign -up assem- bly this morning. Why, oh, why, will people sign up to be four places at once? 6. Those are SOME stories we've been hearing about the Uni High Players' field trip to Chicago last Saturday. The highlight of the day was a visit to a matinee of "Guys ana Dolls" and a trip backstage to meet the stars of the show. 9. Big parade today to advertise the Carnival. Maggie stood in the back of a con- vertible in an Arabian costume, while a brass band played the same tune again and again. Mr. Taylor, who was roped into the group at the last minute, ana- lyzed the situation keenly: "I have a distinct feeling I'm being watched. " 10. Now, look, boys, we can celebrate an upset, but there's a limit. A bunch of Uni High students and alums tore down Fisher's goal posts after the 14-14 tie tonight. 11. 25. 29. 30. "Arabian Daze" was crowded with customers all evening. When we added up the figures on the adding machine, the final profit was a whopping $403. Say, who was that babe in the Opium Den? What will this school ever do without the seniors? We gave our last all -school party in the gym tonight. "PetrusStearnius" was named "Imperator" (emperor to us illiterates) of the new Latin club. Reason? He's the only fourth -year Latin student. The students almost broke the faculty's jinx in the annual touch football game, but had to settle for a 12-12 tie. Bill Hug, the University Chief Illiniwek and a Uni practice teacher, was one of the faculty's leading lights. 31. Uni High wound up its best football season with a 63-2 slaughter of Longview. Imagine, full sets for a Uni High play! If the old stage superstition about bad 1. 3. 4. dress rehearsals making good plays holds up, this one doesn't have a chance. Linda Bennett ad-libbed for two minutes until Nancy finally yelled, "My zip- per's stuck!" NOVEMBER That old superstition fell through. Uni High dramatics have certainly come a long way from past years. Election fever hit Uni High today, with results of the poll strongly favoring the Democrats. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so they say. The French classes re- cently published a newspaper, "Seulment Nous", and the Latin classes planned a "Nos Soli" in the near future. JUST US staffers are still trying to figure out what it all means. 6. There is no rest for the wicked. Mr. Gillette opened tryouts for "Annie Get Your Gun" today. 11. A time for remembering and two minutes of rare, solemn silence. Armistice Day seems a little more personal with three Uni High alums in Korea. 13. The seniors finally found out what the librarians go through with misplaced and misused magazines. They spent two hours sorting the library magazine stacks. A chant of "We want Yale" from the junior and senior boys greeted a Harvard representative who came to tell them about the college. Pat Petty was a credit to Uni High as she reigned as Uni High's queen of the Tri- High Dance. Entertainment was emceed by Mr. Gillette. 21. Now, boys, this isn't football. Three firststtingers fouled out as Uni High lost its opener at Mansfield, 64-61. 26. I will never be able to talk again. Joe Hassell made the winning shot with two seconds to go to give Uni a storybook 54-52 victory over St. Joe. The crowd went beserk in the last quarter. 'AfcjJL,: Y 29. Sixteen Uni Highers cut their Thanksgiving vacation short by attending All- State music activities. Did you ever try to sing with a stomach full of turkey? DECEMBER 11. 13. 14. 17. 18. 20. 22. 25. How's that for an assembly? Ensembles, Madrigals, Orchesis, and the Orchestra combined for a gala program of Christmas music. Shirley Beaty's solo per- formance in Orchesis' "The Juggler of Notre Dame" was the high point of the program. New lesson in how to attract attention: drive a convertible with the top down in a snowstorm. The method behind all this madness was the transportation of scenery for the Christmas Concert. The new look in Uni High concerts came off without a hitch. The tableaux shifted smoothly, and they tell me the music was up to its usual standards. I was too worried about the tableaux to notice. The civics class finally got through arguing about where to go and went on a long -promised field trip to the International Harvester plant In Chicago. Heard from one worker as the students passed by: "I wish I was young again. " The general class opinion was that the remark referred to Bill and Carolyn. Our money -grabbing Student Council is at it again. It's not enough that every one of their financial ventures so far have surpassed all expectations. Now they're asking us to take part in a new magazine sales campaign. The operetta cast and choruses were announced at the Christmas Dance tonight. Lots of old friends from years past turned the dance into one big gab session. Ah, sleep, sleep, sleep. Two more weeks of this should make me completely ready for three months of the old grind. That studying doesn't really have to be done over vacation. Once again, Merry Christmas. *%~ „ \ V *w JANUARY 1. Just after midnight somebody realized that our graduation year had finally arrived. It certainly looked far away back in 1949. 5. The last morning of sleeping late for quite a while. Oh well, it couldn't last forever. 8. 10. JUST US staffers groaned under assignments for a very special project. Okay, kids, you asked for it! Chrisman gave Uni High a fine lesson in the arts of sportsmanship and being good hosts. They entertained us in a fine new gym, and acted more like gentle- men than any school Uni had ever played. Uni High won the game, 53-46. 16. Who, who, who loaded that rifle? A small hole in the ceiling will be a lasting reminder of "Annie Get Your Gun. " 20. Some of Uni High's unreconstructed Democrats were seen wearing black arm- bands today. Come, now, let's not have any hard feelings. 21. The new exam system didn't do much to relieve the students' suffering. It's surprising how much can be asked in just two hours. 22. I think I can graduate without biology. 23. Gee, a whole day and a half of vacation! Even that tiny amount was denied JUST US staffers, still hard at work on that big project. FEBRUARY' 3. The old rag has finally come into its own. The first printed edition of JUST US was distributed this morning. 5. The Terrapin show was highlighted by such beautiful special effects as flash- 4* 4 - ■■— iiim Jt J. »"'' lights under water and candles along the edge of the pool. Cookie and Pat convulsed the crowd as coal miners. 13. Dress rehearsal for "Annie Get Your Gun." We began to consider stacking extras three deep so we could find room for everything backstage. 14. A near-capacity crowd cheered "Annie", and not a single set fell over in the middle of the show. One "rifle shot" turned out to be a cap-gun "pop". 16. And another performance. Scenes from the play were well received by a Cham- paign High exchange assembly audience. *** , 18. Mr. Lewenstein, the new history teacher, had quite a time learning people's names in the American History classes. It seems that Bill Becker answered to Cliff Murphy, and Cliff claimed he was Bill. 22. Our G.A.A. played host to girls from nine schools at the annual Playday. A wide assortment of games filled both attics and the gym. Mr. Schuetz was even forced to retreat to 206 for operetta practice. 24. The chemistry class raised its annual big stink today. Hydrogen sulfide per- meated every corner of the third floor with a delightful fragrance of rotten eggs. 27. How can you beat a team like that? Uni High lost its last regularly scheduled basketball game to a sharp-shooting Homer team, 96-73. The Freshmen spon- sored the year's last hop after the game. MARCH 4. Some of the Uni High fans made up for our dismal end of the season by helping cheer Deland-Weldon to victory. Unity beat the Bucks, 61-44. 7. Leap-year came back to us for one day for the Star Dance. The old "cracker- box" didn't look like the same place with those new lights. 14. The U Club dance tonight was graced by a number of bleary-eyed seniors, who had spent the day taking those STIMULATING College Board exams. "A one year high school course should be ample preparation. " Just who do they think they're kidding? 18. Mr. Lacky called the track team out to start working out this afternoon. "Blue- fingers" Becker furnished us with some unprintable testimony of the joys of early track practices in this climate. 25. Francis Barker darn near broke Bill Pickard's back in operetta rehearsal today. He decided it would greatly increase the effectiveness of "We triumph now" if he put both feet on Bill's back. 27. The operetta's first night performance ran smoothly, even with the new contents for the mugs of "pirate sherry". Our nice, blue uniforms were marked for pos- terity with the pirates' footprints. 28. Life won't seem the same without the songs of "The Pirates of Penzance" ring- ing in our ears. Oh, well, it couldn't last forever. A full house caught us un- awares by calling for some encores we hadn't prepared. APRIL It seems that some of the junior boys thought those stories in the JUST US April fool edition were the real thing. That item about switching the girls' and boys' locker rooms had particularly interesting results. 2. Just as we were beginning to get tired of school, the teachers were beginning to get tired of the students, and everybody was just plain pooped, Easter vaca- tion stepped in and saved the day. 11. That "talented" sophomore class put on a Spring Fling to end all Spring Flings. All the music was tape-recorded, and the floor show had a strong flavor of Bob Buddemeier. 15. The biology class visited the museums in Chicago today. The day's activities were called to a halt when Terry got lost, only to be found peacefully asleep, leaning against a dinosaur skeleton. 18. What, another field trip for the Players? This one took fifty people to Chicago for a matinee and a television show. *m> 6. 16. County Music Festival. Why will all those darn fools try to squeeze into such a small space in this hot weather? Hey, what am I talking about? I'm one of them! Our much-improved Orchestra showed what can be accomplished with a lot of hard work. As usual, we were treated to the individual offerings of Uni High's State Contest musicians. Slowly but surely we're being forced to turn control of the school over to the juniors. Student Council elected its officers today, and petitions are starting to come in for yearbook posts. MAY 5. Uni High's speedsters showed up very well in the County Track Meet, considering their lack of depth. Why did they always pick the coldest night in May for this meet? Don't worry, boys, it's legal this time. The seniors skipped off in the early morning hours for Turkey Run. Mr. Goessling failed in a valiant attempt to keep his pipe lit while swimming, and "Dan'l Boone" Shelton gave free lessons in mountain climbing. Something new was added to the annals of Uni High dramatics, as the Flayers celebrated the end of a fine year with experiments in arena staging and a rousing party. All those names we called the juniors certainly don't apply to their sparkling Prom. We had never seen such a collection of beautiful girls and beautiful formals before. 20. It looks like next year's athletes will only need to look over to the sidelines to get all the inspiration they need. Next year's cheerleaders were elected today. 23. The Orchesis concert lived up to its usual standards. The music and stage ef- fects enhanced the grace of the dancers. 30. The juniors finally got the hatchet tonight, but not in the way that certain seni- ors had proposed to give it to them. Organized cheering sections made life Mi§I^-i£ exciting for the orators. 31. This is the beginning of the end. The bacca±
