Surprisingly, she was able to put up with us for the remainder of the year, and then go as far as to teach U.S. History jun- ior year. She entertained us with Gregorian chants and low-quality jokes, which always held our attention. Throughout those years, we came to develop a fond- ness for her patience and understanding. Exhibiting a great sense of humor, David Dannels quickly became one of our favorite teachers during the junior year. His unconventional teaching methods were a pleasant change from the ordinary. He kept his light attitude even when burdened with his own personal problems. His crazy antics in the classroom taught us the principles of physics, while removing the tediousness of boring labs, and earned him the title, "Bad Muffin." For these reasons, we dedicate this yearbook to these two teachers who have made out stay at Uni so much more enjoyable. Glamour Girl 1981 "Oh you dirty rat. Agora Week The committee worked very hard (as usual) and put together another fun-filled, educational, and relaxing week of unorthodox classes. Steve Rader was the group's fearless leader, and Mr. Ball was the sponsor. National Honor Society This is the society's fourth genera- tion in Uni's history. Its presence here is due to Mr. Renner (an ex-vice prin- cipal) who noted that most high schools had these societies, but that Uni did not. The situation was promptly rectified. They all put in a lot of time towards taking and developing the pictures for this book. Yearbook Staff The yearbook staff worked many long, hard hours this year from September to February during school, on weekends, and after school, often late into the night. The staff started out with about 16 people, but as time went on, and the going got rough, the staff dwindled to this size of 6 dedicated students and sponsor, Andra Johnson. The play was directed by Mrs. Perrin. 45 Christmas Dance The Christmas Dance this year was organized by the Sophomore Class. Mrs. Rondon, and Mr. and Mrs. Baker were the chaperones, while Mr. Butler was the sponsor. The band (Alias) played mostly top 40 to a large turnout at the lllini Union. The relaxing atmosphere and friendly interaction gave the students a much needed rest. Thanks to Mag- gie Williams, Stephi Wengert, and Julie McMillan, the Christmas Dance was a big success. 46 Christmas Party The annual surprise Christmas Party, to noone's surprise, was once again held at Uni Gym. It was highlighted by the Senior gifts, teacher's skits, musical perform- ances and FOOD. A select few also enjoyed an evening of strip poker. Back at school, courses ranged from philosophy to Italian cooking to French Hair-Braiding. 49 In Review 50 Sports 51 Cross Country The Cross-Country team put out a lot of effort this season, which proved to be rewarding for everyone involved. The team as a whole worked together and grew, yet at the same time many indi- viduals developed their talents as well. Peter Hanratty and Shagg Makino showed exceptional talent, and wrapped up a great season by running at the Sectional meet. These two will be back next year to help pull off another successful year. Donald Barnhart, in his first season running, showed tremendous courage and growing talent. He will be another one to keep our eyes on next year. The rest of the boys' team worked hard and as the season progressed, their determination paid off with some great team performances. The girls' team was once again at the top. Andrea Talley and Brenda Brinkerhoff led the team and found themselves also leading most of the races. Andrea qualified for State after a very hard and challenging year. Brenda was consistently per- forming with great strength and talent, promising the girls' team a great season next year. The trio of Julies — Julie McMillan, Julie Janusz and Julie Schult — along with freshman Jana Kramer also put in a lot of time and hard work throughout the season. Mike McCollom, coach of both the boys' and girls' teams, was very pleased with the results of the season and believes that the team learned a lot about running, working together, and just how strong a team can be when reaching for goals. 52 Lying Down: Mike McCollom, Coach. The library annex becomes the favorite gathering spot, since we had no place in the lounge. Chess and Dungeons and Dragons are constantly played in the second floor hallway and the library annex. Mrs. Johnson teaches us the meaning of the word "livid" in English class. While in room 206, we discover the remainder of a past jello fight on the ceiling (which, incidentally, is still there.) The Toms machine arrives in the south stairwell, but is soon moved beside the office, so Mr. Royer can keep it out of trouble. All the girls swoon over Josh Parker. We experience our first Uni High Curriculum experiments; Sub Advisory and Aesthetics classes. They were a roaring success — so successful, in fact, that they were not offered again, because their excellence could never be repeated. JB takes up with the freshmen, because he is too good for us. George Wood teaches us about winners and losers. He also teaches us the proper manner in which to make a class discussion violent. Grace is a JV cheerleader. The first Angora week is held. A wonderful trip is taken by many to Lake Geneva. There we learn a great deal about farms and quarries, and Mr. Dirks informs us how not to do stupid things. A few excitable girls see a "killer fag" and Jake chases it with a stick. Freshman year begins with the addition of Beverly, Nancy, Howard, Garth, Alan, Mike L, Carolyn, Jeanne, Peter K., and Steve B. to our class. However, we lose Jack Lieby and Andrew. Everyone wonders if David and Nancy are twins. Our class splits into cliques. We have numerous rivaling factions. The term freshman girls is coined due to the actions of a famous freshman cheerleader group. This is led by Jeanne, who took over in a big way. A big fight starts with the Mob against Grace and Chimene. Gossiping is a favor- ite way to pass the hours. The Chess club is formed, and the members soon become too good for the rest of us. We can tell because they never seem to want to talk to anybody but themselves. Everyone catches up on their sleep in Mr. Sammon's Social Studies class. The dumb people of the class are taught by Mrs. Joc- kusch. One day, she kicks the whole class out. Her independent learning program teaches us little. But we do learn that 1 1:17 is Cannibal time and nobody's legs are safe under tables. Christy Storter teaches us the mysteries of sex education, and shows us only the good films. Many of us take mysterious trips to collect Boneyard water. A new language called "Quasi-Modo is created by some of the people who have nothing better to do with their time. Howard goes to Kent State protests. Everyone thinks Beverly is a teacher. Beth draws pigs on the blackboards. The phone is moved to the South stairwell, and the Tom's machine is moved to where the phone was. Our JV Basketball team wins a game. Ted and Garth are lured into a world of corruption. We get our first view of Mrs. Bailey, who teaches us about many fascinating Illinois poets. After 30 pages of Carl Sandberg, we are up to our ears in corn, sunsets, and the prairie. We learn to write our own poems. Many Penguin poems appear, and John G. informs us that it is not easy being German. Mike D. begins his rise to power. Alan Robertson has unique views on life. He treats us to them in his English speeches on "The right wrong way to go camping, and "It just ain't right!" Brian and Grace are our first couple. Andrea and Josh Parker have a pudding fight. JB upsets Mrs. Hoag, which results in her repeatedly throwing chalk at him. Theo is a Rabbitt. We begin Sophomore year. Garth, Howard, Alan, and JB leave us, but we gain Jimmy Talley, Jon R., Lutz A., liana R., and Ricky. Andrew returns from France. The Varsity Basketball Team again wins no games. Paul T. finally breaks 5-feet. ^^SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Ss. ^<+<+Lii* a«rik 111 Expressions ^ m ^ ^^ In Review Mary is a rah rah. After having done a large portion of the 1980 yearbook, I knew what a large job it was producing a yearbook, and knew that I had a lot of work to do in order to make this yearbook successful and punctual. I spent the summer making notes for the upcoming year. We got started rather late, due to red tape in our changing publishing compa- nies. After the first staff meeting, I realized that lack of experience leads to con- fusion and lack of interest. Soon, the staff of 15 dwindled to a size of 5 dedicated persons and their loyal sponsor. Throughout the year, we spent incredible num- bers of hours working on pictures, layouts, copy; those things required to make a yearbook. I truly hope there is a greater interest taken in the yearbook next year, so that a few people do not end up doing all the work again. I would like to thank Lisi Edwards, Heather Greenberg, YoYo Nishida, Chi- mene Robbins, and Andra Johnson. These people comprised the yearbook staff, and they put in a lot of time into this book. I would like to thank the photogra- phers. Photographs are the most important part of a yearbook, and a lot of time was put into the taking, developing, and printing of them. I would also like to thank our company representative, Bob McElwee, for the assistance he has given us. Finally, I would like to thank my mom, for her endless understanding help and support. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this yearbook, and that it provides you with many happy memories in the years to come. .o xIOaM «ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss 126 .UNIVERSITY H.S.
